TARRING PRIORY Club Finals 2021
Sat 11th and Sunday 12th September 2021
We were graced with good bowling weather this year and the green played well allowing our bowlers to give of their very best efforts.
Derek Ridley our President was on hand to present the trophies to winners and runners up. The day was brilliantly run by Stuart Logan our competition secretary and Terry Urben was available to lend his skills as umpire of the day
CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES -
The Gordon Garrett Cup
Stuart Logan
Stuart Logan bowled well to record his first Championship Singles win. John Fairs was only able to pick up the scraps and Stuart cruised through to a well deserved double having picked up the Championship Pairs title earlier in the day. The score on the day was 21-9.
CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS
Ashbury Cup & Lepherd Cup
Stuart Logan & Stuart Shwartz
This was a good match between two well balanced pairs Derek Meechan and Alan Messer made all the early running but a couple of good drives to the ditch by Stuart Shwartz got them back into the game. At 20 ends the score was 17-17. In the final end the lead changed hands no less than 4 times but that final bit of luck favoured the two Stuarts. The score after 21 ends was 20-17
TWO WOOD SINGLES
Roome Cup
John Schools
In a repeat of the 2019 final John Schools won the trophy and Keith Brinsmead again had to be content with the runners up award. The final score was 14-9 in favour of John.
2 SETS SINGLES
Eric Charnock Cup
Keith Brinsmead
This match could not have been closer. After the first 2 sets of seven ends both Keith and Derek Meechan had won 1 each. The third set was decide on the final end when one of Keith's woods gently glided off a short wood to earn him the crucial winning shot and another singles title to add to his growing collection.
COMMITTEE SINGLES
Hazleden Cup
Keith Brinsmead
Despite taking an early lead, John Fairs was caught on the line by Keith and the final score was 21-19
HANDICAP SINGLES
Heppenstall Cup
Ian Robertson
In his first singles final at Tarring Priory, Ian Robertson opened up a 12-1 lead against the very experienced Keith Brinsmead. Keith could never close that gap and Ian won comfortably 21 shots to 9
HANDICAP PAIRS
The Knight Cup & Chris Wood Cup
A Messer & R Bland
Alan and Roy had a great start to the match taking an early 10 point lead which Nick Eager and Butch Shakespeare despite bowling some great woods, could never break down.
Alan and Roy were solid throughout and finished worthy winners 25-13 with one end to spare.
TWO WOOD DRAWN PAIRS
The Brian Ford Cup
Nick Eager & Martyn Whittle
Nick had already played in the Handicap Pairs in the morning session and with partner Martyn controlled the match from end 1 to completion. Stuart Logan - newly crowned as Singles Champion couldn't lift his game to support playing partner Ted Hood. Final score 18-9
NEVER WON HC SINGLES
The J D Smith Cup
Butch Shakespeare
Butch left it to the very last moment to complete a comeback against a very good challenge from Steve Allen. Butch managed to come back from 5 shots to level at 20-20 before gaining the final shot to cross the winning line.
TWO WOOD KO TRIPLES
The Harold Webster Trophy
Derek Meechan,
Alan Messer
Roy Bland
Ian Robertson, Linda Harwood and Seamus McCabe started with a huge advantage of 6 shots because of the handicap difference. Alan, Derek and Roy soon overhauled the difference but spirited bowling by the underdogs meant that they trailed by just one shot going into the final end. An excellent draw shot by Alan made sure of the win but by the narrowest of margins 22-20.
Alan and Derek have now won the Shield 5 times each and Roy has his name engraved twice
VETERANS HC SINGLES
The Platt Cup
Ray Lister
Ray Lister was always in control and was good value for his 21-9 victory. Roy Bland couldn't get to grip with the short jacks and Ray showed no mercy.
DRAWN FOURS KO
The Presidents Shield
John Fairs, Butch Shakespeare
Michele Slater & Ray Baker,
Only countback on ends could guarantee our winners immortality in this popular event
